Spike Lee, 'Black Panther' Make Academy History With Oscar Nominations

Meanwhile, the 18th century dark comedy "The Favourite" is tied with Netflix’s “Roma” for most nominations at 10

“Black Panther” clawed its way to the top of the Oscar list as the Marvel movie becomes the first superhero flick ever nominated for Best Picture.

“It’s fantastic for ‘Black Panther.’ That film not only broke records at the box office but it was also a cultural milestone for many people,” Fandango correspondent Nikki Novak told Inside Edition.

It was another first as Spike Lee finally earned a Best Director nod for "Blackkklansman.” It is also the first time he has earned a Best Picture nomination.

Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani made the announcements early in the morning Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” picked up five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Rami Malek.

But there were some notable snubs as Bradley Cooper was passed over for Best Director for “A Star Is Born." But he did get a nod for Best Actor, along with co-star Lady Gaga for Best Actress.

“Since the Academy can vote in 10 films for best picture. I am very surprised that it did not get best picture nominations. If you are going to use the world snub, that is another snub,” Novak said.

Another snub was the hugely successful “Crazy Rich Asians."

The 91st academy awards are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 24. The show will be broadcast on ABC and still has no official host
